An angel is a supernatural being in various religions. The theological study of angels is known as angelology.

Abrahamic religions often portrayed them as benevolent celestial intermediaries between God (or Heaven) and humanity. Other roles include protectors and mentors of God’s people and servants. The religions of Abraham describe angelic hierarchies that differ according to sect and religion. Some angels have specific names (like Gabriel or Michael) or titles (like seraphim or archangel). Those banished from paradise are called fallen angels, except for the heavenly host.

Angels in art usually look like people of extraordinary beauty. In Christian works of art, they are often identified with bird wings, halos, and divine light.
