Basilisk is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masaki Segawa and published in Japan in 2003 and 2004 in Kodansha Young Magazine Uppers, based on the 1958 novel The Kouga Ninja Scrolls by Futaro Yamada. The anime, released in 2005 by Gonzo, closely follows the manga. Apart from a few awards. In 2004, the manga won the Kodansha Manga Award for overall manga. Segawa went on to produce serialized adaptations of Futaro Yamada’s novels with the Yagyu Ninja Scrolls in 2005, Yama Fu-Tang in 2010, and Ju: Ninpo Makai Tensei in 2012.

Also, the two-part story Oak’s Ninja Scrolls: A New Basilisk Chapter, written by Masaki Yamada with illustrations by Segawa, was also published in 2015; The Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls manga adaptation illustrated by Tatsuya Shihira with character designs by Masaki Segawa was serialized between 2017 and 2019, and the anime adaptation by Seven Arcs Pictures aired in 2018.

The story took place in 1614. Two clans of ninja, Iga Tsubagakure and Kuga Manjidani, battle each other to determine if Tokugawa’s grandson Ieyasu will be the next shogun. A deadly competition between 10 elite ninjas from each clan breeds an age-old hatred that threatens to shatter any hope of peace between them.
