The health benefits of carrots can be traced back to when they were grown in the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of Europe thousands of years ago. These original carrots resemble the carrots we see today. There were purple, red and yellow carrots. In the 15th and 16th centuries in Europe, carrots were widely grown and were initially brought to North America at that time.

In today’s commercial market, China produces about a third of all carrots, which are bought and sold throughout the world. Russia is the second, and the United States is the third. Currently, American adults consume about 12 pounds of carrots per year.

The name “carrot” comes from the word “karoton,” which is Greek. The first three letters -kar mean the shape of horn, referring to the carrot portion, which is underground and usually eaten.

Carrot is a vegetable root known for its rich supply of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant nutrient, which is named carrot because of the large quantities the carrot contains.

Carrots contain many other nutrients. Carrots offer many other nutrients that are good for the cardiovascular system, have anti-cancer properties and help the immune system.

The Benefits of Antioxidants in Carrots

All different carrot varieties contain very valuable nutrients with antioxidant properties. More traditional antioxidant vitamin C and phytonutrient beta-carotene antioxidant are just some of the many carbohydrate antioxidants.

The amount of phytonutrients antioxidants varies depending on the type of carrot. For example, purple and red carrots are well known for their abundance of anthocyanin antioxidants. Orange carrots contain beta-carotene, which accounts for 65% of the total carotenoid content. Half of the carotenoids from yellow carrots are lutein. Regardless of which variety is chosen, each of them has excellent antioxidant properties.

Carrot Cardiovascular Benefits

Not surprisingly, numerous studies have shown that the health benefits of carrots extend to the cardiovascular system. This is largely due to their rich antioxidant content. The cardiovascular system needs constant protection from damage by free radicals. This is especially true for the arteries because they are responsible for transporting highly oxidized blood in the body.
