Grey (British English) or gray (American English) is an intermediate color between black and white. This is a neutral color or achromatic color, which means that it is literally “colorless” because it can consist of black and white. It is the color of a cloudy sky that is combination of ash and lead. The first recorded use of gray as a color name in English was in 700 AD.

Grey and gray are also accepted in English. They refer to the color of a neutral tone between black and white and can also be used metaphorically to convey darkness and dullness. However, gray is the more popular spelling in the USA, and gray reigns in the UK.

Gray is an insensitive, individual color that is usually associated with meanings of boring, dirty and gloomy, as well as formal, conservative and sophisticated. Gray is an timeless and practical color that is often associated with loss or depression. Gray acts on the mind and body causing disturbing feelings. Light gray is feminine in nature, and dark gray is masculine in nature.


Grey is the color of independence and self-reliance, although it is usually considered a negative color. This may be the color of avoidance and affection (since it is neither black nor white). The grey color indicates separation, lack of involvement and ultimately loneliness. Too much grey leads to a feeling of nothing, but a little grey will add a sense of rock solid to your product.

Some shades of grey are associated with old age, death, taxes, depression or lost sense of direction. Grey is a true neutral color. Its energy gives imparts void, emptiness, lack of movement, emotions, warmth and identifying characteristics. Therefore, grey can be calm. There is a detached and isolated feeling. Grey can have a cooling effect when applied to other brighter colors. It has a stabilizing effect.

From the point of view of color psychology, grey is the color of compromise. Neither black nor white, it is a transition between two non-color ones. The closer to grey it turns black, the more dramatic and mysterious it becomes. The closer it is to silver or white, the more brightest color it becomes.

The grey color is muted, quiet and reserved. It does not stimulate, energizes, rejuvenates or excites. In terms of color, grey is conservative, boring, drab and depressive on the one hand and elegant and formal on the other, but still never glamorous.

Gray conforms that it is conventional, reliable and practical. This is the color of maturity and responsibility associated with the grey hair of old age. It will never be the center of attention, a dynamic leader or director. It is too safe and toned down.

Too much gray creates sadness and depression and a tendency to loneliness and isolation. Add some color to change this. Most people are indifferent to grey – this refers to a corporate worker in a grey suit – conservative, reliable, formal and independent, and possibly boring.
