Being lonely can be so much more than simply not having any friends. Even though friendship is vital to stave off loneliness, it isn’t always the cure when coping with loneliness. Relationships are important but making friends isn’t always easy. Depending on a person’s social skills, or if they battle shyness, their social life can suffer, resulting in difficulty making friends. In fact, being shy is often the number one road block to friendship, making dealing with loneliness all the more difficult.

Unfortunately, in this day and age, overcoming loneliness is not as easy as one might think. Often, when someone is interested in learning how to deal with loneliness, depression can rear its ugly head because they can feel adrift, even when surrounded in a sea of humanity. In fact, that sea can cause some to experience a sense of drowning!

If you have been dealing with loneliness feelings of late, you are not alone! Even though others in your life may seem to be doing just fine, almost without exception they too struggle with feelings of loneliness from time to time. It may even seem that they are always doing things with friends and family but that can often be a cover to what is really going on inside their head. It just could be that all of their busyness is nothing more than a way for them to cope. It is possible that they feel much like you do but are able to deal with it in that way.

The fact is, loneliness is way more common than you might be led to believe. Believe it or not, there is a virtual epidemic of loneliness in society today. Remember when I referenced you feeling lost in a sea of humanity? Well, that is a very real feeling experienced by millions.

You might well think that, with so many millions upon millions of folks living close together, especially in the larger cities, there would be no such thing as loneliness. Well, you would be wrong! Surprisingly, with all of the technological advancements, from cell phones to Internet to computers, etc., you would think we would be better positioned to stay in touch. However, just the opposite is occurring.

Back in the ‘good old days’ families were more tightly connected. Especially during the days when so many families worked the farm together. Even when the industrial age first began to transform the way we worked and paid our bills, families still stayed close. Multiple generations lived under one roof or on the same piece of property. However, as progress changed the landscape to the point where families no longer lived near each other, friendships began to mean meeting people not related to you. It has also meant embracing other cultures and ways of looking at life that were different than those we grew up with.
