Crocodiles are the oldest reptiles (200 million years old) that resemble a huge lizard. Undoubtedly, the most terrible of all reptiles, crocodiles have 23 different species with the largest, called “saltwater crocodile” and the smallest “dwarf crocodile”. Most species can be found in Africa and some regions of Asia.

With a life of about 50-60 years, crocodiles are ambush predators. They patiently wait for their prey to be close enough to attack and then strike fiercely, leaving little room for escape. Crocodiles have well-constructed jaws with sharp teeth for killing. They mostly feed mainly on vertebrates, such as fish, reptiles, and mammals. These cold-blooded animals can stay for up to one year without killing. Crocodiles, as a rule, gather in water areas, such as rivers, swamps, lakes, evergreen forests, wetlands and saline water.

The word crocodile comes from the ancient Greek word crocodiles, which was used for lizards. Crocodiles are one of the most refined reptiles that have a fully four-chambered heart and a well-developed cortex and a full diaphragm and muscles adapted for movement. External morphology is best suited to aquatic life. The body is lighter, which allows it to quickly swim in the water. They have cushions feet that are ideal for water lifestyle and reduce resistance to swimming.

The nostrils are closed when they are under water. The brain case is bony and is absent in overheating and postfrontal bones. Their tongues are attached to the mouth with a graceful membrane so that they are unable to stick out the tongue.

The body is covered externally by scales that carry pores and are sensitive to function and are analogous to the system of lateral lines in fish. The pores are located at the base of the upper and lower jaws. It is believed that the balance also emits an oily substance that helps to remove dirt. Crocodiles remain without food for a very short duration. They can keep the prey very much and immediately catch it. They have very strong and sharp teeth, which can easily be pierced in the body of the victim. The muscles of the jaw are very strong. Crocodiles are ambulatory, and they wait for the prey to approach them, and when the victim approaches them, they will catch it with their strong jaws. They are cold blooded and the metabolism rate is very slow, so they can remain without food for a longer period of time.

Crocodiles are dangerous to humans and, as is known to kill many people in different parts of the globe. Records of the human death by crocodiles are known in Britain and Burma. In addition to their threatening nature, they are also a source of economic importance. Their fur is the source of leather for the production of commercial goods, and in some countries, they are consumed as a favorite food.
