Lizards can be found in all continents other than Antarctica. There are many different species of lizards and these reptiles come in different sizes too. If you are thinking of adopting a lizard as a pet, there are many things to take into consideration before making your decision. Not only do you have to take into consideration the size of lizard, also spend some time investigating the temperament. Not all types of lizards are ideal as pets.

They are found in variety of places in the wild. You will find lizards in deserts, rainforests and even temperate zones. They are usually active during the day when the temperature is moderately high. However, when the temperature soars, most lizards hide away in their burrows or under rocks. During winter, lizards hibernate and can be seen only on warmer winter days when they come out to feed. So when keeping a lizard as a pet, you would have to maintain a moderately high temperature in the tank, especially in winters.

The feeding of a pet lizard is extremely essential. Some lizards eat insects, while others consume just leaves. Some lizards are omnivorous and can eat plants, small animals and also insects. So, make sure you know what to feed your lizard when you are purchasing it. However, it is recommended that you adopt just those lizards that are easy to handle and look after.


One lizard that makes a good pet is the bearded dragon lizard. This is medium sized lizard, which is timid and social. You can easily tame them and after that it will love to be handled. You can keep the bearded dragon lizard in a terrarium. The only problem is meeting its nutritional demands and environment needs as they are natives of Australia. However, if you are ready to invest some time and effort, you can overcome these problems. A bearded dragon lizard is omnivorous and loves to eats vegetables and small animals and insects. However, 80 percent of the lizard’s diet is composed of insects, while 20 percent is of plants and vegetables. You can feed the lizard mice, crickets, wax worms, earthworms and even cockroaches. When it comes to plant, do not hesitate from feeding the lizard broccoli, zucchini, kale, collard beans, Swiss chards, parsley, alfalfa, clover, apples, grapes, papaya and melons.

Another lizard that makes a wonderful pet is the horned lizard. This lizard can live happily in captivity as long as it has the necessary space to move around and its food is taken care of. You can feed your horned lizard harvester ants. It needs around 100 ants a day. Apart from this, you can even feed the lizard grasshoppers, spiders and beetles.
