Rabbits and bunnies are one and the same animal – there is no difference in breeds or species, but only in the word that we prefer.

  • Rabbits and hares are lagomorphs, an order that also includes a pika, a small mammal that looks like a big mouse and lives in a colder climate.
  • The lagomorphs were originally classified as rodents, but in 1912 a distinction was made between them and the rodents.
  • Rabbits are completely clean animals and easily repel and stretch. Like a dog, a domestic rabbit can be taught to come to his/her name, sit on his knees and do simple tricks.
  • Rabbits are herbivores, eat a diet entirely from grasses and other plants. Because their diet contains so much cellulose, they go through two different types of feces to completely break down their food. While other grazers will chew and swallow their food, then they will “burp” it back up (like cows chew cud), rabbits will re-ingest their feces in the first pass to get all the necessary nutrients.
  • Happy rabbits will do what is called “binky”: they will jump into the air and turn around, something like a bunny Baryshnikov. A group of rabbits is called a herd.

How Smart is a Pet Rabbit?

Rabbits have strikingly distinctive personality. They can be as playful and stupid as puppies or kittens, as independent and fascinating as cats, or as faithful and frankly loving as dogs. Long-time rabbit owners say that domestic rabbits are as smart as cats and dogs in their own way.

How Long do Rabbits Live as Pets?

Well cared of domestic rabbits can live 7-10 years, and some live in adolescence. This is about the same life as some breeds of dogs, and requires the same long-term involvement. Rabbits do not need veterinary care, like dogs and cats do.
