A collection of 22 bones, the skull protects the brain and supports other soft tissue of the head. During development of the fetal, the bones of skull formation in healthy membranes in the fetal head. As the bone grows during the period of intrauterine development and in childhood, they begin to merge, forming a single skull. Only the bone that remains separated from the rest of the skull is the jaw or mandible.

The surrounding brain area of the brain, known as the skull. In this area we have eight cranial bones:

  • Frontal bone
  • Two parietal bones
  • Two temporal bones
  • Occipital bone
  • Ethmoid bone
  • Sphenoid bone

Together, these bones provide a solid wall of bone tissue surrounding the brain, which has only a few holes for the nerves and blood vessels. Our occipital bone contains a foramen magnum, a hole through which the spinal cord gets into the skull to attach to the brain. The occipital bone also forms the connection atlantooccipital with the atlas (the first cervical vertebra in the spine).
